Indian River County’s 5210 “Let’s Go!” initiative is helping local children and families eat healthy and be active. To improve the community’s overall health, the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County encourages residents to adopt and practice the 5-2-1-0 message, which stands for:
- Eat 5 or more fruits and vegetables
- 2 hours or less of screen time
- 1 hour or more of physical activity
- 0 sugary beverages
In Indian River County, over one-third of elementary school youth and nearly two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese. Obesity is associated with increased risk of heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some types of cancer. The 5210 message promotes healthy eating and active lifestyles through collaborative partnerships that help raise awareness and spur action among students, their families and the community.
Join the movement for a healthier community by becoming a 5-2-1-0 family! Follow the 5-2-1-0 principles to help your family grow stronger, smarter, and healthier. You can help your entire community become healthier, too. Look for ways to bring the 5-2-1-0 message to your school, your workplace, your neighborhood, and wherever else you and your family spend time!
